US military service members lower the American flag during the daily flag retreat in Magic Kingdom park

Join us for a park tradition that has occurred every day since Magic Kingdom park opened on October 1, 1971. The American flag is lowered while "The Star-Spangled Banner" plays in a tribute to service members and veterans.

Portraits of Courage

Check out this exhibit that features more than 60 portraits of US service members and veterans.

Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors is a special exhibit in the American Adventure Pavilion at EPCOT.

The exhibit by former President George W. Bush includes more than 60 oil portraits of service members and veterans who have served since 9/11, and whom he has come to know personally since leaving office.

Disney recently announced the extension of the exhibit for Guests to visit through 2026. You can learn even more about the veterans featured in the portraits by watching Our America: Portraits of Courage, streaming on Hulu.

Shades of Green

Discover the rich history the Army and Walt Disney World Resort share with this resort.

Shades of Green originally opened as a Disney-owned resort known as the Golf Resort in December 1973 and was renamed the Disney Inn in February 1986 to appeal to a wider Guest base.

In the early 1990s, the Army sought a local business to lease resort property for a new Armed Forces Recreation Center in Orlando. Disney’s offer to lease the Disney Inn was selected, and Shades of Green opened on February 1, 1994.

The name "Shades of Green" reflects the different shades of green uniforms worn by various US military branches and its location between 2 of Disney's green PGA golf courses.

Tiana's Bayou Adventure

Explore the story of Princess Tiana's father, a World War I veteran, in the queue of Tiana's Bayou Adventure.

Tiana's father James served in 369th Regiment, one of the first African American regiments to serve with the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. He is honored with photos and memorabilia within the queue.

Several photos of James serving in France during the war adorn the walls, including a framed newspaper clipping in Tiana's kitchen that shows her father receiving the Croix de Guerre medal by the French government for valiant service in action.

Ferryboats Honor Disney Legends Who Served

Discover the US veterans—and Disney Legends—whose names adorn 2 Walt Disney World Resort ferryboats.

One of the highest honors the US military can bestow is naming a US Navy ship after our nation’s heroes. In similar fashion in 1997, Walt Disney World Resort honored US Army Major General William "Joe" Potter and Navy Rear Admiral Joseph "Joe" Fowler by re-christening 2 ferryboats that transport Guests to and from Magic Kingdom park.

Disney Legend Navy Rear Admiral Joe Fowler was hired by Walt Disney in 1954 to lead the construction of Disneyland Park after retiring from the Navy in 1948. He led a 25-year career overseeing construction and operations at Disneyland Park and was named a Disney Legend in 1990.

Disney Legend Army Major General Joe Potter served in the US Army for 38 years before Walt hired him in 1965. As vice president of Florida Planning, Joe oversaw construction for the entire infrastructure of Walt Disney World Resort. He was named a Disney Legend in 1997.
