An okapi standing behind a tree

Okapis - Disney Animals

Encounter a rarely seen rainforest wonder with stripes like a zebra, the body of a horse and a head like a giraffe.

Okapis at Walt Disney World Resort

Okapis (pronounced Oh-COP-ees) were virtually unknown to the Western world until 1901. Don’t let the stripes fool you—the okapi is related to the giraffe, not the zebra. A rare sight in the wild, okapis are native to just one place—the Democratic Republic of the Congo!

You may spy an elusive okapi during the following experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park:

Home Away From Home

Disney animal care experts bring the magic of the African rainforest to life to help okapis feel at home.

Here’s a look inside the life of an okapi at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park:

  • A Habitat for Hiding: Shy and reclusive animals, okapis are known as the “ghosts of the forests.” The okapi habitats include trees and brush to allow the okapis to rest, hide and explore.

  • Veterinary Care and Behavior Training: Through training and positive rewards such as a tasty treat, okapis learn to participate in their own health care. Following a verbal cue or hand signal, they will present different body parts for a visual exam.

Disney Conservation: Saving Okapis

Okapi populations are threatened by civil unrest, illegal logging, mining and poaching in protected forests.

The Walt Disney Company is committed to saving wildlife and protecting the magic of nature together as a global community. The Disney Conservation Fund* supports nonprofit organizations working with communities living in and near okapi habitats to create alternative income options, increase overall community welfare and discourage activities that can harm okapis and their habitat.
