Kangaroos - Disney Animals

Marvel at the astonishing strength and speed of these magnificent marsupials!

Kangaroos at Walt Disney World Resort

Living in large groups called mobs, kangaroos rely on their muscular bodies, long tails and broad feet to get around. Their powerful hindlegs help them reach speeds exceeding 30 miles per hour (48 kph)—faster than most riding horses!

Native to Australia, these hearty mammals can be found across the country, from its grasslands and deserts to its forests and plains. Like all marsupials, young kangaroos—or “joeys”—continue growing after they are born in a special stomach pouch on their mother’s belly, which they can leave for short periods of time to learn, play and explore!

As you stroll along Discovery Island Trails at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, be on the lookout for these marvelous mammals. You may spot a western gray kangaroo foraging in the foliage or a red kangaroo—the largest marsupial on the planet—lounging in the grass.

Home Away From Home

Every species has specific needs, and Disney animal care experts are dedicated to crafting natural habitats and nutrient-rich diets to keep these herbivores happy and healthy.

Here’s a look inside the life of a kangaroo at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park:

  • A Hoppin’ Habitat: Lush greenery, shaded spaces and sparkling pools provide these marsupials with plenty of places to snack, lounge and bathe.

  • Enriching Experiences: Animal care experts stagger feeders and delicious snacks throughout the kangaroos’ habitat to encourage foraging and engage their natural curiosity. There are also ample opportunities for these happy hoppers to socialize with the other birds and animals they share their home with.

  • A Menu for Every Season: In the summer, the kangaroos enjoy willow, banana and mulberry browse. In the winter, they’re served up a selection of ear leaf acacia, as well as Japanese blueberry and silverberry branches. Daily delights include leafy romaine lettuce, crunchy carrots, hearty apples and more!
