Asian Birds at Walt Disney World Resort

From lush forests to sprawling mangroves, Asia’s diverse landscapes are home to an impressive assortment of fun high-flying friends. Each species has its own personality, feathered flair and unique cravings that include leafy greens, insects, seeds and the occasional crunchy peanut.

With over 30 species of Asian birds at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park, you may discover shy sorts with subtle plumage or those with calls as bright as their wing feathers. Explore the mystical trails at Maharajah Jungle Trek to find out how many of these friendly flyers you can spot.

Home Away From Home

Here are a few of the feathered friends you may encounter on your adventures:

  • Malayan Great Argus Pheasant: Often confused with peacocks, these birds have azure blue heads, and the males have tail feathers that can grow as long as 55 inches (140 cm)! They are named for the elaborate patterns on their plumage—which resemble eyes—and for Argus, the 100-eyed giant from Greek mythology.

  • Galah: These vibrant flyers are part of the parrot family and have rose-colored heads, light pink underbellies and gray wing feathers. If you look closely, you may notice that the males of the species have brown eyes while the females’ eyes are pink.

  • Nicobar Pigeon: Recent DNA testing has revealed these pigeons may be the closest living relatives of the extinct Dodo bird! Their wings are colored with iridescent limes, dark greens and metallic blues.

  • Victoria Crowned Pigeon: At nearly the size of a turkey, these birds are the largest living species of pigeon on the planet. Their name comes from their lacey crest of head feathers, which resemble the style of crown worn by Queen Victoria.

  • Metallic Starling: With their shinning green feathers and glossy purple accents, these birds won’t be hard to miss! Even their nests are decked out in style—keep an eye out for these spherical homes, which hang from tree branches instead of sitting in them.

Disney Conservation: Saving Birds in Asia

The protection and management of wetland habitats is crucial for many Asian bird species, which rely on these areas as nesting sites, foraging grounds and migratory stopovers.

The Walt Disney Company is committed to saving wildlife and protecting the magic of nature together as a global community. The Disney Conservation Fund* supports nonprofit organizations working with communities across Asia, who share their environment with bird habitats. Their efforts foster human-wildlife coexistence, encourage habitat restoration and inspire further conservation action by emphasizing the strong cultural importance of these avian species.
